Statistics Canada has released investment in construction data from April 2024.

Investment in building construction decreased two per cent to $20.5 billion in April compared with March. The residential sector declined 2.7 per cent  to $14.2 billion, while the non-residential sector fell 0.5 per cent to $6.3 billion.

On a constant dollar basis (2017=100), investment in building construction decreased 1.9 per cent to $12.6 billion in April.

Investment in non-residential construction edged down by $31.2 million to $6.3 billion in April. Declines in the industrial and commercial components were partially offset by a slight increase in the institutional component in the month.

In April, seven of the 13 provinces and territories reported gains in institutional construction investment, with Manitoba leading the way. Notably, this was the 15th consecutive monthly increase for Manitoba. On a year-over-year basis, the value of institutional construction investment in Manitoba nearly doubled, from $40.0 million in April 2023 to $79.8 million in April 2024.
